Example: Daniel Boone

Here is a brief example of how to use the Historic Missourianswebsite to supplement 3rd and 4th grade social studies curricula and meet GLE standards in a variety of ways.

For this example, view Daniel Boone’s full biography.

    1. Use biographies to meet learning expectations.

Excerpt 1: “Daniel Boone is one of the most famous frontiersmen in U.S. history. He was a skilled hunter, trapper, and trailblazer.”

      • 3rd Grade 3aC: “Identify and describe the historical significance of the individuals from Missouri who have made contributions to our state and nation.”
      • 4th Grade 3aC: “Identify and describe the contributions of historically significant individuals to America and the United States prior to c. 1800.”

Excerpt 2: “In 1799, he led his family and other settlers across the Mississippi River into land populated by Native Americans but claimed by Spain. Boone spent the last twenty years of his life in what is now Missouri.”

      • 3rd Grade 5B: “Name and locate major cities, rivers, regions, and states which border Missouri. Describe and use absolute location using a grid system.”

      • 4th Grade 5B: “Name and locate specific regions, states, capitals, river systems and mountain ranges in the United States based on historical or current topics.”

Excerpt 3: “The war erupted in 1754 when France and Britain began fighting over territory in North America. It was called the French and Indian War because the Native Americans fought mostly alongside the French. At the time, the colonies had yet to gain independence from England, so the settlers fought alongside the British.”

      • 3rd Grade 3aA: “Describe the migration of Native Americans to Missouri prior to European settlement in the state. Describe the discovery, exploration and early settlement of Missouri by European immigrants. Describe the reasons African peoples were enslaved and brought to Missouri.”
      • 4th Grade 3aA: “Describe the migrations of Native Americans prior to 1800. Describe the discovery, exploration and early settlement of America by Europeans prior to 1800. Describe the reasons African peoples were enslaved and brought to the Americas prior to 1800.”

Excerpt 4: “During the early days of westward expansion, Boone’s explorations helped open the frontier to new settlements.”

    • 3rd Grade 3aF: “Describe the importance of the Louisiana Purchase and the expedition of Lewis and Clark. Evaluate the impact of westward expansion on the Native Americans in Missouri. Discuss issues of Missouri statehood.”
    • 4th Grade 3aF: “Investigate the causes and consequences of westward expansion prior to 1800.”
  1. Incorporate Historic Missourians biographies and provided outside resources to strengthen research and inquiry.
    • 3rd Grade 6C: “Research stories and songs that reflect the cultural history of Missouri.”
